1972 HFP, Volume 4 Number 9
An asteroid was spotted over Canada and entered the earth's atmosphere in Utah. Arthur Bremer was sentenced to 63 years for his shooting of Alabama governor George Wallace and three others as Wallace campaigned for president in Laurel, MD. Idi Amin, president of the African nation of Uganda, gave the country's estimated 50,000 Asians 90 days to leave after announcing that God had told him in a dream to remove all Asians from Uganda. And at the summer Olympics in Munich, Germany, swimmer Mark Spitz won a world record seven gold medals.
The Jesus People Training Center in Hollywood was going strong, with Bible studies every Monday and Tuesday evening, a potluck supper and fellowship every Thursday, and street witnessing on Fridays and Saturdays. A new "drop-in center" was scheduled to open soon and the HFP was receiving donated sofas, carpeting and ping-pong tables.
Our friend Chris Landis joined the Jesus People staff as concert promoter, organizing music festivals and school assemblies across the U.S. and overseas, and was busy setting up a major concert in the south bay area for early December. Our brother Rich Horton had joined the HFP staff as a writer and cartoonist as well as running our sandwich stand (you didn't know we had a sandwich stand?) and would soon become our associate editor.
A friend named David wrote a two-page article describing how he found peace with Jesus at a Hare Krishna temple in San Francisco after serving a sentence in federal prison for drug smuggling. The Krishna devotees were secretly holding Bible studies when their guru, the "swami" was out of town! Another brother, Mark, wrote 'Thoughts from a Jail Cell" about meeting Jesus in a prison in Texas.
Our editor Duane Pederson, and Chuck Smith and Lonnie Frisbee from Calvary Chapel, appeared with a group of young Jesus People on evangelist Katrhyn Kuhlman's television program. Kathryn introduced her audience to the Jesus Movement and proudly declared herself to be one of the Jesus People. The two photos at right show Kathryn, and Lonnie, on that very memorable program.
